What Is the Detinets?

The word Detinets refers to the inner citadel of a medieval Russian city — the equivalent of a kremlin or castle keep. Novgorod's Detinets is among the oldest and best-preserved in all of Russia. Situated on the western bank of the Volkhov River, its distinctive red-brick walls and towers define the city's skyline and enclose one of the most historically dense spaces in Eastern Europe.

Though a fortification has stood on this site since at least the 9th century, the current walls date primarily from the late 14th and early 15th centuries, rebuilt in brick after earlier wooden and earthen defenses. The kremlin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Novgorod and Surroundings" designation.

The Walls and Towers

The kremlin wall stretches approximately 1.5 kilometers and is punctuated by nine towers. Walking along the perimeter gives a vivid sense of medieval defensive thinking — towers are positioned to provide overlapping fields of fire, walls are thick enough to absorb cannon fire, and the Volkhov River itself formed a natural barrier on the eastern side.

  • Kokui Tower: The tallest tower in the kremlin, added in the late 17th century. It offers panoramic views over the city and river from its upper observation level.
  • The Golden Gate: The main ceremonial entrance to the kremlin, used for processions and official arrivals.

Key Monuments Inside the Kremlin

Cathedral of Saint Sophia

The 11th-century cathedral is the spiritual and architectural centerpiece of the entire kremlin complex. Built between 1045 and 1052, it is Russia's oldest surviving stone building and a masterwork of early Rus architecture. (See our dedicated article for a full exploration.)

The Millennium of Russia Monument

Erected in 1862 to mark the thousandth anniversary of Rus statehood, this extraordinary bronze sculpture is one of the largest monuments in Russia. It depicts figures from across a millennium of Russian history — princes, tsars, warriors, clergy, and writers — arranged in tiers around a central orb and cross. The detail is astonishing; spending time reading its figures is a journey through Russian history in miniature.

The Novgorod State Museum-Reserve

Housed in the old episcopal palace complex, this world-class museum holds one of Russia's finest collections of:

  • Medieval Novgorodian icons, including works of international significance
  • Birch bark manuscripts and archaeological finds
  • Applied arts, jewelry, and metalwork from the medieval period
  • Historical exhibits tracing Novgorod's story from its origins to the present

The Faceted Chamber (Granovitaya Palata)

One of the oldest surviving civic buildings in Russia, the Faceted Chamber dates to the late 15th century and was used as a reception hall by the Archbishop of Novgorod. It now houses a treasury display of liturgical objects, including gold and silver church vessels of exceptional craftsmanship.
